Today my head has been filled with design. I’m preparing to open my shop, and I’m frantically working to get everything ready. Yesterday I finished up a Spring themed mini-kit. Today I started a full sized kit all about the chicken pox… I really do enjoy designing. Well… the designing part of it anyway.
I’m sure it’s a sentiment felt by many creative types who also run a business. The creative side of things fuels us, keeps us going in so many ways. The business side of things is simply a necessary evil. That’s how I feel about the organizational side of design.
Creating elements, creating papers, designing overlays, and custom products… it’s all a fabulously zen thing for me. Photography gets me revved up, designing relaxes me – two sides of the creative coin. But organizing my product so it’s ready to sell? Ugh. I wish I could hand that end of it over to someone else. It takes me far longer than it should simply because I don’t enjoy it – and I end up putting it off and then have several products that all need work at the same time. LOL I won’t complain too loudly though. I’m pretty blessed to be able to do what I do.
So watch for me soon. I’ll be setting up shop at the Plum. Opening day will soon be upon us. 🙂
My challenge for March has been posted, and I thought I’d take a minute to write a bit of a blog post about it too. For those of you who aren’t aware, my challenge this year is a journal challenge. I’ve wanted to create a scrapbook about me for some time now. But generally when I sit down to work on a layout I let my photographs speak for themselves, and it’s almost always about the kid. So it really is a challenge for me to sit down and write a little something about ME. It’s important though, and so I’m writing about me FOR Lily-Ann.
Each month I’ll provide a journal prompt, so if you’d like to take the challenge along with me, you’ll have a book of your own finished after the year is over. This month I scrapped a page about how the girl and I share a love of My Little Ponies.
Feel like checking out the challenge? They’re all listed at: https://td365.wordpress.com/the-challenge-2012/ And each and every month during 2012 there will be another prompt added to the list.
I’ll be honest. I’m a little too brain-tired and body-weary to write much tonight. In the afternoon we headed out to Winter Shines, an annual Winter festival here in Saskatoon. The girl got to go for a pony ride, and visited with a bunch of animals at a mobile petting zoo. We checked out a bunch of amazing ice sculptures, and took pictures on the ice throne. After checking out some of the goodies at the farmers market (which is located right on site) we each picked out a treat to snack on, and then headed out to Diefenbaker hill for some serious sledding. We took my youngest sister home and snuck in a visit with the ‘rents before heading home for some supper and a little Princess and the Frog (a la Disney). But before any of this? I got a little scrappin’ in.
Today was a wonderful day. We created all sorts of new memories, and I got to scrapbook another great memory from this past Autumn. All in all? I’m a happy camper. Days like this, full of family, really do rock!
Well, we seem to have another day where by the time I sit down to blog, I’m just too darn brain-beat to do much. LOL So I hope you’ll forgive me if I just share a little news. 🙂
I spent most of yesterday and today finishing up and packaging my first scrapbooking kit to be released at Polka Dot Plum. Yep. I’m on my way to becoming a designer. I don’t have a launch date to share just yet, but it won’t be long. And I’ll be launching with two, possibly three digital scrapbook kits. So it’s a little nerdy, I can’t help it. I’m excited about it.
I started in the design apprentice program at the Plum back in the Spring. It took longer than initially planned to get through it as I ended up having to go on hiatus when business got a little crazy. So this has been something I’ve been looking forward to for almost a year, which is why I hope you’ll forgive the dorky excitement.
Want a peek? Here’s what one of the kits looks like (and the preview doesn’t include all of the scrapbook elements):
Click on the image to see it full size, and to get a good feel for the very real textures. So yeah! Keep an eye on my blog and at the Plum: http://www.polkadotplum.com/ I’ll be sure to let ya’ll know when I’ve launched, and I promise to have a goodie or special of some kind just for those of you who read my blog. 🙂
Hmmm… I guess I should blog tonight. LOL
Very honestly my brain is a little pile of mushy barley just now. I’ve been working on a scrapbooking kit that I’ve been in the middle of for months. I figure I should get it finished up. It’s just not inspiring me at the moment, so it’s slow going. But I need to get it finished and get my store launched at the Plum. I’ve got another kit that’s been done and ready for months (finished it before starting this one) but want to make sure I’ve got a few products ready to go for when I open. No fun just having one kit sitting there all by it’s lonesome. 😉
Well, I suppose one thing I could blog about tonight is my dog show schedule. I haven’t decided for sure which shows we’ll be attending, but this is how it’s looking tentatively:
March 2-4, Prince Albert SK
April 13-15, Battleford SK
May 4-6, here at home in Saskatoon
May 19-21, Regina SK
June 1-4, Edmonton AB
July 13-15, Springbank AB
August 3-6, Calgary AB
September 1-3, here at home in Saskatoon
It’s not set in stone yet, but these are the shows we’re considering and will likely be hitting. More may be added as their information becomes available, or changes made as other things come up. But if you’ve got someone you’d like to send out with us (we do have a couple spots that may be available for the right Chihuahua, Havanese, Pomeranian, or other small dog) let us know. 🙂 Hmmm… just realized I haven’t updated my handling site in an embarrassingly long time. Yikes! Well. LOL The link is in the side bar, just the same.
Starting this month I’ll be hosting a challenge at the Plum… Okay, yes, I know. I host challenges there every month as part of my duties as a member of their Creative Team. But this challenge is something new and different. For the next year, I’ll be hosting a monthly challenge that is all about journaling your journey.
I’ve wanted to scrap about myself for quite some time, but honestly? I just never do it. I really would like to create something that is about who I am, and what’s important to me… something I can eventually give Lily-Ann. Sure, she’ll have all my writing (yes, there’s a lot of it) but I want something that is uniquely personal. And I know, in spite of the fact that this is something I really want to do, I know I’m likely to just keep putting it off.
Hosting this challenge is going to be the perfect way to ensure I actually take up the challenge myself. So each month I’ll come up with a topic, and maybe a word art, template, photo mat, or some other goody to go along with it… and we’ll all create something special. Come the end of the year, each of us will have twelve layouts all about who we are and whats important to us. It should be pretty cool.
So hop on over to the Plum and join me in the challenge forum here: http://www.polkadotplum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=219 Should be an interesting ride!
Well… looks like the holiday season has come and gone.
First we bid a goodbye to Yule. Then it was so long Christmas Eve. Followed by a fare thee well to Christmas. A “don’t care where ya go, but you can’t stay here” to Boxing Day. Then today it was our family feast of leftovers… See ya next year!
It was a gooder, full of fond memories (and some crummy breaks too – gotta love a holiday car accident). The holiday season of 2011 will be generally looked back upon with joy. And here’s a little scrapbooking layout sharing a wee bit of our Christmas morning:
Pictures, beginning at the top left, are of: Riki, Jewles and the kid, Ron, Wilson and kid kid, my Dad and Lily-Ann, Lily and Marie, my Mom and her grandgal, and finally Steven and Lil’. Not pictured but also present (get it? present?) were myself and Damon. Not present, but loved none the less, my brothers Aaron and Earl.

Okay, so I’m back to scrapbooking. My first LO (layout for non-scrappers) went together super easily and quickly… and considering it was the first one I’d done since WAY back in the Spring, I was actually pleasantly surprised by it’s ease. This second LO is another story. BUT I think I may know what the problem is.
I hate the template.
I figured I’d used a template for this one, just to help speed it along as I didn’t really have much inspiration prior to starting it. But after sitting down with it on THREE separate occasions now, it’s just wrong. The spaces where I clustered, ignoring the template, look great. So I really think I just need to trash the few hours worth of work I’ve done so far, keeping only what I have in those small spots, and work from there. Honestly? I think if I do that, it will come together quickly.
I didn’t realize I hated the template before starting. I saw a couple LOs that others had done using it, and liked what they did with it… but it’s just not me. It’s too… ohhh…. I don’t know… too square. LMAO I’m all about free flowing and following your scrappin’ whims. And this template is just too PLOP there-ya-go.
I should have just started by looking through the kit I picked and seeing what inspired me… but I tried to take the easy road, and, well… it made the whole thing a lot more difficult. 😉 Lesson learned.
I was off playing around at the Plum when I realized I should actually be on WordPress writing tonight’s blog post. LOL Oooops.
So here I am. 😉
Honestly? I think I’m just so excited about the backlog of photography edits almost being through that I’ve been thinking about getting back to my scrapbooking. I’m almost through my training to be a designer (I was almost through back in March, but had to put it all on hold when things got crazy busy and I’ve been on a leave of absence ever since) and hope to open my store in the new year. But right now? right now I just want to do a layout. LOL
I’ve got a couple of LOs (that’s short for layouts for all you non-scrapbooking folk) that I need to have finished shortly. One in the next couple of days, and the other about a week later. Nothing like having a looming deadline when you’re finally able to get back at it. 😉
So, yeah… scrapbooking on the brain. Can’t help it. The idea of having time to do something for ME??? It’s been months and months since I’ve had that luxury, and well? I’m close to happy tears over the idea.
The stress is finally lifting. I can get back to working how I ENJOY working. None of this groupon-induced stress. No more 3 and 4 photo shoots a day, and a backlog of 80 shoots needing editing. It feels so nice to have things return to NORMAL. 😉 Three shoots a week, and time to edit those shoots within that same week. No backlog. No stress. Taking it easy and enjoying my work and all the blessings that come with it. Yay me! 🙂
Sooo…. since taking my workload into Apple’s latest version of Aperture, I’ve become a total lover of presets. I’ve created two of my own, and have a couple dozen others as well. It’s rare that I don’t do any further tweeking after applying a preset – but they do go a fair distance in cutting down my editing workload.
Haven’t checked out Aperture 3 yet? Apple is offering a free one month trial – so it’s a good time to look into it. It’s a great tool for amateur photophiles too, so don’t think that just because you aren’t a professional it’s not worth investing in a good processing tool. Learning how to properly edit your photographs can turn a good capture into a great one. And a good photo editing program is a MUST HAVE for anyone who’s involved in scrapbooking. It’s the ideal way to provide those special touches that can really punch your work up a notch (or even two or three). 🙂 So check it out: http://www.apple.com/ca/aperture/
Seriously, this is one program that should make it into your bag of tricks. 😉
Now… since I’ve been toying with presets I have to ask… Each photo shoot I edit seems to inspire a new one. So it won’t be long until I have enough of them to launch my own preset collection. Would ya’ll be interested in the TD Photography preset collection?
