Breakfast; the most important meal of the day

I know, just as you do, how important a good hearty breakfast is.  It really can make all the difference to your day.  I know the days when I take a little extra time to have a half waffle with berries, OJ, and a sausage link are often some of my best.

A good breakfast gives fuels your day.  It keeps you energized and helps your creative juices flow.  It helps you feel your best and helps you be your best, thusly spreading to those around you too.

However…

Is it odd that while I was typing the “…” I was saying, in my head of course, “dun, dun, dun” slowly stepping down from note to note in a ominous minor key?  😉  Nah, I didn’t think so.

…we don’t always have time to set aside for this all important meal.  So sue me.  It just doesn’t happen.  Heck yeah I love days where I can lounge about leisurely in the morning until I begin to feel sunshiny.  At which point I can saunter into the kitchen and pull out all the many implements required to make said fabulous breakfast.  Then bake, fry, and slice up my very favourite morning foods.  Afterwards savoring every succulent satisfying bite.

Great.  Now I’m craving maple syrup drenched bacon and buttermilk pancakes slathered in butter with a pulpy fresh orange juice.  Nice.

Today though, like most.  Just wasn’t one of those days.  So I hopped in the shower (thankfully Damon was home today so he fed the kid while I washed my greasy mess of hair), grabbed a banana, the girl, and my bag and jumped in the car with my Mom and sister for a trip to the Warman thrift shop.

Ta da!  My breakfast:

…and yes, I am still on the lookout for some pretty pink placemats.

Writerly Style

Every writer has a style all their own, a way of communicating that not only shares a story or a thought, but also that persons way of being.  My favourite writers have always been those who relay their tales as if telling, or retelling an oral folk story.  Who’s words come off the paper as if spoken, from a dear friend.  I suppose that is why I have such an easy way with words…  I write in the same voice as I speak.

Some writers are amazing world builders, artists like Tolkien, who’s worlds and characters take on an entire life of their own.  However these writers are not always easy to read.  Tolkien’s works don’t flow easily from the tongue, and they can be difficult for a novice reader to slog through (though even as a child that never stopped me).  Other writers craft amazing dialogue, to the point where you can hear the characters voices in your head as you read.  So many of Ms. Rice’s characters pop into mind – voices you’ll never forget, each completely distinct from one another.  Then there are those who are able to do both, and who do so with such brilliant smithery as to beguile your very senses…  and these are the writers for whom you cry for a reconnection with, when their stories come to an end.  These are the writers like DiTerlizzi – seriously, if you haven’t read his WondLa books yet what are you doing sitting at your computer or on your iWhatzit reading this?  Get on it!

Myself?  Well…  I’m not a fiction writer.  I’d never delude myself into thinking I could craft a novel.  A short story?  A bit of flash fiction?  Sure thing.  But I could never hold your attention long enough to bring you so deep into a world with such rich characters that you’d mourn for them when finished.  And I’m okay with that.

I write in my voice, and I write for every day people.  I may not particularly like people, but I love them…  I think people are full of potential.  And if my voice, my stories, my experiences, my knowledge, can inspire people?  Then I was “write” to put fingers to keys.  I know I will not change the world, but perhaps I can enkindle you.

From Mundane to Meaningful?

I’m having another rather pensive night, and while that can lead to rather long winding, interesting blog posts?  It’s just as likely to lead to me being unable to decide what to write about.  😉  So I figured I’d check out the new Weekly Writing Challenge here at WordPress:  from mundane to meaningful.

Hmmm…

So, what did I do today?  To be honest?  Nothing that I would consider mundane.  Sure, it was every day things like playing with kid kid, crafting, cuddling, but I don’t consider any of that mundane.  Damon came home, we had supper, watched a couple episodes of Avatar (the series about Ang) then I got ready for an evening photo shoot.  I got to work with a lovely couple who were super easy to photograph.  Then I came home and we got the girl ready for bed.  I laid next to her as she fell asleep, and now I’m blogging.  To be honest, the closest thing to mundane about my day is this, the blogging.  And even it has a huge amount of meaning for me.

My family?  My life?  The things I do?  They matter.  So it’s hard to see any of it as mundane.  And I don’t even feel particularly blessed in that regard.  I believe what we ALL do matters.  What we do, the choices we make, they impact the lives of those around us.  Who we are, the things we do?  It all matters, and THAT gives my life excitement – which is the antonym of mundane.

A2Z – Bullying

Blogging our way from A to Z on sexual and gender identity - Bullying

For those who don’t know, we are currently celebrating Pink Revolution, which is a Saskatchewan initiative that got it’s start from the Day of Pink.  Pink Revolution is a week long anti-bullying campaign in it’s very first year, beginning on March 30th it will finish up on April 5th.  The Day of Pink follows on April 11th.  If you haven’t gotten your Pink Revolution T-shirts yet they are available through The Avenue Community Center or Diva’s for only $5.  Day of Pink shirts can be purchased through their website.

In contrast to what some think, bullying is everyone’s responsibility.  And homophobic bullying is putting many of our youth to the test.  We read the stories, over and over again.  Youth that were harassed to the breaking point, unable to handle the torment, looking for any way out.  Youth that needed to know they weren’t alone, youth who needed someone – anyone – to step up to the plate.

Some people wonder why I’m so vocal on issues of bullying.  The fact of the matter is we never know who we may reach.  I refuse to stay silent.  Our young people need to hear from adults and other youth who get it, who have their heads on straight, and who get just how wrong homophobic bullying is.  We need to speak out in support of our gender creative children and our gender variant youth.  It is our responsibility.

Be visible.  Wear a flag pin, put on a Pink Revolution t-shirt, join your school’s GSA – make some noise.  Be heard.  Make a difference.  You just may be that light in the dark someone needed to see.

the april a to z blog challenge

Blogging from A to Z in April

So…  I know it’s rather last minute.  But I’m thinking about taking part in the A2Z blog challenge.  I already post on a almost-daily basis, so I’ve got that part down.  And I think it could be fun coming up with a title/subject matter based on a different letter every day.  What do you think?  I have until tomorrow to decide.

From A to Z April Blog Challenge

Journal Your Journey – scrap along with me

My challenge for March has been posted, and I thought I’d take a minute to write a bit of a blog post about it too.  For those of you who aren’t aware, my challenge this year is a journal challenge.  I’ve wanted to create a scrapbook about me for some time now.  But generally when I sit down to work on a layout I let my photographs speak for themselves, and it’s almost always about the kid.  So it really is a challenge for me to sit down and write a little something about ME.  It’s important though, and so I’m writing about me FOR Lily-Ann.

Each month I’ll provide a journal prompt, so if you’d like to take the challenge along with me, you’ll have a book of your own finished after the year is over.  This month I scrapped a page about how the girl and I share a love of My Little Ponies.

Journal Your Journey challenge page for March

Feel like checking out the challenge?  They’re all listed at: https://td365.wordpress.com/the-challenge-2012/  And each and every month during 2012 there will be another prompt added to the list.

Journal your Journey

Starting this month I’ll be hosting a challenge at the Plum…  Okay, yes, I know.  I host challenges there every month as part of my duties as a member of their Creative Team.  But this challenge is something new and different.  For the next year, I’ll be hosting a monthly challenge that is all about journaling your journey.

I’ve wanted to scrap about myself for quite some time, but honestly?  I just never do it.  I really would like to create something that is about who I am, and what’s important to me…  something I can eventually give Lily-Ann.  Sure, she’ll have all my writing (yes, there’s a lot of it) but I want something that is uniquely personal.  And I know, in spite of the fact that this is something I really want to do, I know I’m likely to just keep putting it off.

Hosting this challenge is going to be the perfect way to ensure I actually take up the challenge myself.  So each month I’ll come up with a topic, and maybe a word art, template, photo mat, or some other goody to go along with it…  and we’ll all create something special.  Come the end of the year, each of us will have twelve layouts all about who we are and whats important to us.  It should be pretty cool.

So hop on over to the Plum and join me in the challenge forum here: http://www.polkadotplum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=219  Should be an interesting ride!

Lots of scraptastic stuff today.  🙂

First off, Sugar Pie Scraps has got an amazing new kit out at Polka Dot Plum.  It’s called Snow, Sledding & Sweets.  I absolutely love it.  When I first saw it, I knew I liked it…  but it wasn’t until I actually started working with it that I fell in love with it.  This kit really is a dream to work with.  It’s got a ton of flexibility, and works with both the sillier layouts and the more serious ones.  It really is fabulous.  And even better?  You have a chance to WIN it.  Hop on over to http://www.digishoptalk.com/boards/happy-place-31/win-snow-sledding-sweets-263926/ to enter the free draw.
