Domestic Goddess I Ain’t

My brain is swimming tonight, and I’ll admit, that makes it hard to decide what to write about.  I’ve just got so much on the go right now that it’s difficult to focus on one thing.  I spent the day on the phone with several different people.  I also spent a little while at the girl’s school – putting feathers in the hair of her teachers.  I worked on one of the scrapbooking kits I’ll be selling when my design studio launches at Polka Dot Plum.  And I thought my way through a couple things I’ll be needing to make decisions on soon.

When I look around the house, it doesn’t really look like I did much today.  And that’s the one curse of the work-at-home mom.  My day was incredibly full and busy, and I spent it almost all at home…  but looking around me?  You’d think I’d been eating bon bons watching stories on the tele.  😉  You know what though?  I’m okay with it.

I had a full day.  I have a full life.  And one day, when things are not so busy, when I’m not focused on being a mom, a professional, and an activist all at once?  Then maybe my house will look like a sanctuary of cleanliness…  probably not then either though.  ‘Cause I’m sure I’ll be busy just having fun with my man.

Photograph, Design, Organize.

Today my head has been filled with design.  I’m preparing to open my shop, and I’m frantically working to get everything ready.  Yesterday I finished up a Spring themed mini-kit.  Today I started a full sized kit all about the chicken pox…  I really do enjoy designing.  Well…  the designing part of it anyway.

I’m sure it’s a sentiment felt by many creative types who also run a business.  The creative side of things fuels us, keeps us going in so many ways.  The business side of things is simply a necessary evil.  That’s how I feel about the organizational side of design.

Creating elements, creating papers, designing overlays, and custom products…  it’s all a fabulously zen thing for me.  Photography gets me revved up, designing relaxes me – two sides of the creative coin.  But organizing my product so it’s ready to sell?  Ugh.  I wish I could hand that end of it over to someone else.  It takes me far longer than it should simply because I don’t enjoy it – and I end up putting it off and then have several products that all need work at the same time.  LOL  I won’t complain too loudly though.  I’m pretty blessed to be able to do what I do.

Strawberry Scraps - my design business

So watch for me soon.  I’ll be setting up shop at the Plum.  Opening day will soon be upon us.  🙂

My first commercially available scrapbook kit!

Well, we seem to have another day where by the time I sit down to blog, I’m just too darn brain-beat to do much.  LOL  So I hope you’ll forgive me if I just share a little news.  🙂

I spent most of yesterday and today finishing up and packaging my first scrapbooking kit to be released at Polka Dot Plum.  Yep.  I’m on my way to becoming a designer.  I don’t have a launch date to share just yet, but it won’t be long.  And I’ll be launching with two, possibly three digital scrapbook kits.  So it’s a little nerdy, I can’t help it.  I’m excited about it.

I started in the design apprentice program at the Plum back in the Spring.  It took longer than initially planned to get through it as I ended up having to go on hiatus when business got a little crazy.  So this has been something I’ve been looking forward to for almost a year, which is why I hope you’ll forgive the dorky excitement.

Want a peek?  Here’s what one of the kits looks like (and the preview doesn’t include all of the scrapbook elements):

Haha… oops…

Soooohhhh….

Yeah….

I was off playing around at the Plum when I realized I should actually be on WordPress writing tonight’s blog post.  LOL  Oooops.

So here I am.  😉

Honestly?  I think I’m just so excited about the backlog of photography edits almost being through that I’ve been thinking about getting back to my scrapbooking.  I’m almost through my training to be a designer (I was almost through back in March, but had to put it all on hold when things got crazy busy and I’ve been on a leave of absence ever since) and hope to open my store in the new year.  But right now?  right now I just want to do a layout.  LOL

I’ve got a couple of LOs (that’s short for layouts for all you non-scrapbooking folk) that I need to have finished shortly.  One in the next couple of days, and the other about a week later.  Nothing like having a looming deadline when you’re finally able to get back at it.  😉

So, yeah…  scrapbooking on the brain.  Can’t help it.  The idea of having time to do something for ME???  It’s been months and months since I’ve had that luxury, and well?  I’m close to happy tears over the idea.

The stress is finally lifting.  I can get back to working how I ENJOY working.  None of this groupon-induced stress.  No more 3 and 4 photo shoots a day, and a backlog of 80 shoots needing editing.  It feels so nice to have things return to NORMAL.  😉  Three shoots a week, and time to edit those shoots within that same week.  No backlog.  No stress.  Taking it easy and enjoying my work and all the blessings that come with it.  Yay me!  🙂

Scraptastic Saturdays – OH DEAR!

Well, it’s official.  I’m addicted to designing.  Today I’ve got another freebie for you.  A mini-kit I call “Oh Dear”.

My first kit mainly contained commercial use (CU) items from other designers that I’d coloured or retooled…  just to kinda test the waters.  But with Oh Dear, I built several elements from scratch.  Now that the design bug has bit, I’ll likely be looking for a shop soon, where I can bring you kits on a regular basis.  So stay tuned for that.  🙂  But until then, here’s “Oh Dear”.  Just click to download.  And enjoy!

If you are up for a challenge, check out the Plum.  I’ve got a mini-kit challenge posted there, featuring Oh Dear.  You only have until Tuesday at midnight to play though, so you better hurry.  The challenge is posted here:  http://www.polkadotplum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4915

Enjoy a freebie or two?  Then you’ll want to check out Sugar Pie Scrap’s blog come the ninth.  There’ll be an four seasons blog train rolling through that day in honour of Enchanted Studio Scraps birthday.  Crystals kit is really lovely, so you won’t want to miss it.  Just head on over to http://sugarpiescrapping.blogspot.com/ to check it out and download it.  She’s also released a new kit this week called A Fresh Start that is really something.  The embossed papers in it are absolutely fabulous.

That’s it today.  Take care everyone, and HAPPY SCRAPPIN’!

Today’s Joy

Wanna know where I found today’s joy?  It was in something unexpected, that I’ll admit started out as a chore.

I host scrapbooking challenges at both PDP and ESS, and I normally love creating things for them.  But the date kinda snuck up on me, and this afternoon I suddenly realized that I needed to have a wordart piece finished, uploaded, a layout built around it, and all of it posted by tomorrow.  ACK!  That’s more stress than fun.  And seeing how my focus is “personal joy”, stress is rather contrary to that in most every possible way.

With this stress hanging over my head I began looking through my photographs hoping for some inspiration to strike.  I find it nearly impossible to create anything worthwhile when it’s forced.  Muse is essential for me in the creative process.

Stumbling upon a series of images I took at the Forestry Farm Park and Zoo back in September, everything started rolling.  And soon I had created, not only a wordart, but an ENTIRE mini-kit.  Even better?  This mini-kit (unlike my first kit) is almost completely created using original elements.  Items created from scratch, by me.  Only a button and a bow were designed using CU products from other designers.  Not too shabby for my second kit.

I have to admit, I’m super excited about this one.  I really do think it’s beautiful.

With my first kit I had a lot of trepidation, and I was concerned about whether anyone would like it, download it, or use it.  This time?  I KNOW it’s a good kit.  I’m very proud of it…  and it all centers around my photography.  This kit was created with heart.  I can’t wait until tomorrow when I can share it with the world.  Until then?  We have to make due with one of the photos that inspired the kit.
