Crazy weather and feeling down under.

I wrote this post yesterday, but it failed to upload. I’m out and about briefly right now so am attempting to send before I’m back home and cuddled into my bed again. We are still without Internet after the storm, but as I mentioned below we’re better off than many.

I’ll admit, if this actually posts? I’ll be shocked. We’ve had some rather severe weather here the last couple of days. It all started yesterday around 11:00, but it looks like we’re mainly in the clear now.

We had tornados, super intense winds, hail storms, lots of thunder and lightening… It’s been a little intense. I’m surprised we have as many trees still standing in our yard as we do.

We actually got off pretty lucky. Aside from a lack of Internet starting at about 2:00 today, and a bunch of huge branches down in our yard, we’re a-okay. Some towns have been without power since yesterday, and some folks don’t have much of their houses left. With me being sick in bed all day it was almost like today’s craziness never even happened.

My being sick ended up being a bit of a blessing in disguise. It was the girl’s first day of Summer vacation, so she had big plans. She would have been upset over Mother Nature ruining her day, but was okay with it being wrecked because I was sick.

The two of us grabbed her crafting buckets and spent the day in bed. Drawing some “old school” G1 My Little Ponies, coloring pictures she printed out, and playing games of X’s & O’s (that’s tic tack toe for those not in the know).

The girl is fast asleep beside me now, and I plan to join her as soon as I attempt to submit this post from my iPhone. No late night TV time for me tonight. I need to get better so we can start her Summer holiday’s “for reals”. 😜

Crazy Saskatchewan Weather!

Well, we hit some crazy weather while out on the highway today.  It was this crazy four minute storm sandwiched between beautiful blue skies.  Just nutty.

Seriously, we were driving along only a couple minutes outside Saskatoon.  Blue skies, fluffy white clouds.  Then BANG.  Dark skies, and visibility of only two or three feet ahead.  We got pulled over just in time for the visibility to clear and for hail to begin pummeling us. Then as quickly as it came on, both the hail and rain lifted.  Blue skies once again.  It was absolutely bizarre.

After the Rain!

I took this picture right after the rain stopped.  You can see the dark clouds lifting as if they’d never been there at all.  Click the link below to see (and hear) the hail.  This photograph (with no rain) was taken only seconds after I stopped shooting video.  Crazy crazy crazy.

Gotta love Saskatchewan!  😀

Into the Rain

The wee girlie and I were downstairs when we heard the thunder hit.  Lily-Ann’s eyes lit up, and a slow smile crept onto her face.  “Momma?”  “Yes?”  “Can we go see what the sky is talking about?” How else could I possibly answer?  “Okay.”  I tickle her tiny armpits.  As she doubles over in happy giggles I say “Let’s get dressed for outside.  If we’re going to see what the noise is about we might as well go outside.”

I grabbed my camera as we made our way up from the basement, only to find… or rather, to NOT find, my missing umbrella.  “Looks like there’s only one, but that’s okay, I don’t need mine.”  I help the wee girlie tuck her blue jeans into her rubber boots, open the umbrella, and help her out the door.  “I’ll just be a second Lily-Ann.”  Quickly, I turn behind me to grab my camera.  I may not be able to take it out into the rain without my umbrella, but at the very least I can grab a couple quick shots from the doorway.

So began our 90 minutes outside in the pouring rain.  The thunder cracked, and the rain came down hard.  I was soaked due to a lack of umbrella, and the wee girlie was the same… but from an entirely different cause.  Gotta love how much a pre-schooler loves puddles.  🙂

Into the Rain

Cuddled up…

As the rain pours down, the thunder rolls, and the lighting flashes across the sky…  the girlie and I cuddle beneath Nana’s blanket.  Listening, and loving the sights, sounds, and smells of a Summer storm.  🙂

All cuddled up...

On an unrelated note…  I’ve finished the manuscript for my children’s story.  What possessed me to write a children’s book I’ll never know.  But it was the first time my muse hit me in such an unrelenting fashion in a long time.  I’m quite comfortable writing canine non-fiction (dog training advice, behaviour tips, and breed information most commonly).  But then, one evening, laying in bed next to my sleeping girl I just felt the NEED to write.  The only thing near by was my BlackBerry… so believe it or not I actually wrote the first 1/3 of the manuscript on that.  LMAO  Hey!  When the muse hits, the muse hits!  If I’ve learned one thing as a writer it’s to listen to my inner voice.

Now I begin taking steps on completely foreign soil.  I don’t have contacts (agents and publishers) in this world.  In non-fiction, doing what I’ve been doing for years?  Yep.  I know many folks.  But this is something completely new to me.  So it’s a new adventure… but one I think will be very worth fully delving into.  Wish me luck.

Our old crooked fence

It’s been snowing steadily for the last two days.  And I have to say, it’s about time!  It’s close to the end of January, and it’s finally starting to look like the beginning of December around here.  🙂

Hmmm... frosty goodness.

I’d have loved to photograph all the crisp white snow with my good camera… but it’s still too much strain on my eyes.  Looking forward to picking up the D70 again.  I really am missing it.  Shooting for the first time sans-glasses will be an experience and a half.  It will be worth the wait.
